Regional Coordinator My name is Lynda Kimball and I live in Big Flats New York with my husband Hank and two children, Christopher and Allison. My work experience over the past 25 years has been in accounting. My life experience for the past 8 years has been to care for and advocate for my daughter who has high functioning autism and type 1 diabetes. Parent to Parent of New York State has provided my family with valuable information over the past few years and I am happy to now be working with them and learning through their continued efforts to help families who have children with special needs. Parenting a child with special needs is a full time job. When a parent is suddenly faced with this challenge, the first thing they need is support from another parent who understands the island they have just landed on. I could not have survived without the knowledge I was spoon fed by a couple of really good support parents. Learning how to care for a child who has a chronic and life threatening medical condition and developmental disabilities at the same time was challenging and continues to be. Navigating through the maze of special education, therapies and medical care for my daughter when she was entering school was a huge learning curve as well. I could not have done this with out support. Through these challenges I have become a very good advocate for Allison and hopefully through my efforts she too will become a good advocate for herself. Allison is currently in 5th grade, fully mainstreamed with support from the Autism Spectrum Disorder staff and nursing care throughout the school day. She recently made Honor Roll! Christopher is currently a high school sophomore, honor student and most importantly Allison’s big brother and mentor! I look forward to providing information to people in our community who may be struggling with a maze of medical information and the tangled web from diagnosis to special education.
