Education Advocate I graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1982 with a B.A. in liberal arts. I went on to study and practice law in Connecticut until 2003, when I moved to Long Island for family reasons. I have also been teaching law to paralegals since 1996 at various postsecondary institutions. I particularly enjoy taking complex legal concepts and attempting to simplify them for others. I love discussing the law and the legal system and how the law can be interpreted to make positive changes for individuals. I live with my husband, Andrew, and my children, Anthony (age 6), Valerie (age 5) and Emilio (age 3 ˝), in Bellport, New York. Valerie happens to have Down Syndrome. I chose to work for Parent to Parent because I felt this work would very much complement the other areas of my life. I enjoy speaking with people and problem solving with them, using their own wisdom and resources. Additionally, with three young children at home, I struggle to stay organized and maintain enough “adult time.” This position gives me a point of clarity from which to consider the types of challenges that I –and the parents I serve—face. I particularly enjoy “brainstorming” with my co-workers about how we can collaborate to help a parent navigate the issues they face with their children. Through the support and skills we lend and teach to our parents, we are, in turn, supported. My mission at Parent to Parent is to help parents develop an approach to obtain the education to which their children are entitled, using the law, advocacy techniques, communication skills and their common sense. I help parents to realize and value their own innate expertise when it comes to their children.
