Regional Coordinator My name is Dru Nordmark and this photograph explains why I love my job working for Parent to Parent of New York State!
My children Benjamin 20, Anneke 26, Genevieve 25, Ian 23, have been my greatest source of excitement, frustration, laughter and tears. Three of our children were born prematurely, Ian being the earliest. He spent many weeks in the hospital. My husband Ben was wonderful and far more concerned about me than Ian. He knew that Ian was in good hands, but I was alone at home in Elmira, with two small daughters while he worked in Syracuse during the week. How nice it would have been 23 years ago to have the connections that Parent to Parent have to offer. Little did I know what the future had in store for me! As parents, we are instinctively drawn to others in similar situations. Sometimes the connections are not as easy to make, as we would like them to be. That is where I feel Parent-to-Parent plays a tremendous role. We can offer a safe haven for parents to connect and share the good, bad and the ugly of their lives with someone who understands and is non judgmental. As coordinators, we all walk the walk in some capacity. Because of this unique situation, I feel Parent-to-Parent offers families the gifts of hope and knowledge. We help families remove the “dis” from disability and have a positive outlook towards the future. I was a support parent for several years before being approached for the position of coordinator. I feel very fortunate the opportunity came my way.
