The groups meet monthly and are open to all at no charge.  Groups for parents of school age children, parents of older teens and adults, and for individuals on the spectrum. Also a Yahoo email list, conferences and events, resources, book lists, useful links to other websites, personal reflections and more.

Adaptive Soccer
Mastic Sports Club has started an Adapted Soccer Division for children with special needs from ages 3-14. 20 week program for $35 and 10 week program for $20-uniforms are $30. Call Christine for more information 631-404-8813

Autism Network (New York region)

Epilepsy Neurological/Diagnostic Treatment Program
Offered by The Epilepsy Foundation of LI Clinic, a joint effort with the LI Jewish Hospital Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Board certified neurologists will diagnose and treat seizure disorders. All patients will be offered counseling and social work services as part of the program. People will be referred to LIJ Hospital should further testing be required. Fees will be covered by medical insurance or based on ability to pay. The seizure clinic will be held from 8:30 to 11;30 a.m. at the Garden City Epilepsy Center, 506 Stewart Ave., Garden City on the fourth Thursday of each month. H.E.L.P. for Parents (Helpful Educational Program for Parents)
        Six session program for parents & teens-this unique program will include several interactive sessions on developing behavioral intervention plans, as well as developing and analyzing effective parenting strategies for children/teens with behavioral issues. Other curriculum areas that will be covered include advocating for your child, helping you know what accommodations he/she needs in school, building on the child's strengths, and what can you do to help your child, teen, young adult with AD/HD.         An online community for people with hearing loss, families and professionals.  Offers current news, articles, resources, forums, chats and more on issues related to hearing loss, particularly for parents.  Founder Paula Rosenthal, J.D. is both an adult with hearing loss and a parent of a deaf child.  In addition to publishing HearingExchange she does parent consultations, speaks to groups and writes syndicated articles.  A Long Island parent support group was formed in 2005.

Parent Information Exchange and Support Group
These groups are offered on every other Saturday evening at 7 p.m. and run for about 90 minutes. For more information or to enroll, call the NYFAC office at 718-641-3441. Childcare is always available.

The National Council Helping Hand for Caregivers
Caring for Caregivers is a nonprofit committee founded out of concern for those members of the community who are providing 24-hour care and supervision for a loved one in their home. The goal is to provide up to eight hours of professional respite care each month. The application process is need-based, easy to complete and respectful of the caregiver's privacy. Once the application has been approved, the caregiver will contract with the agency of his/her choice for provision of service, for four hours during any two-week period, up to a maximum of eight hours per month. Applications are currently being accepted from the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Bethpage, Syosset, Woodbury and Hicksville areas. The committee's hope is that these few hours will provide a little breathing space so that the caregiver can attend to his/her own needs. Call 433-8479 for an application.

Recreation
Does your child have a special need? This one hour workshop features stories, songs, playtime and support. Saturdays, March 12, April 9, and May 14, 2005 at 1 p.m. Center Moriches Free Public Library, 235 Main St., Center Moriches, NY 631-878-0940.

Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center presents Common Sense Parenting - a six session skill development program for parents. For more info contact Diane Tuna at 631-673-7836.

Social Language Groups for Adolescents and Teens
Purpose: to facilitate appropriate communication and social interaction with peers. Skills targeted include: appropriately greeting peers, greeting skills including initiating conversation and turn taking, appropriately expressing opinions and emotions, maintaining eye contact with conversational partners. Weekly groups are held on Saturday mornings at the Hy Weinberg Center, Adelphia University, Garden City. For information, contact the Center at 516-877-4850.

UCP of Greater Suffolk Family Support Forum
        Family members of persons with developmental disabilities (from infancy through adulthood) can post questions & answers to each other and also to an UCP-Suffolk Service Coordinator.  Funded for start-up and on-going monitoring by Long Island Developmental Disabilities Service Office under a Family Support Services Contract.

Nassau County Family Support Groups

  • Bereavement Group for Parents of a Special Needs Child:  Six week closed group for parents who have given birth to a special needs child and are learning how to cope with their child's diagnosis. Contact Monica Ann Wakely 516-932-3341
     
  • Children’s Social Skills Group, Adult Developmental Center, Hewlett, 516-596-0073. This program aims to help elementary school children develop communication and problem solving skills. Three groups: Mondays-Wednesdays, 6-7pm.Call for registration information.
  • Epilepsy Support Group, Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, 506 Stewart Ave., Garden City, (516)739-7733, ext. 415. Do you have seizures? Are you having difficulty with jobs, relationships, etc? Are you isolating yourself from family and friends? If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, head to the Clinic for an comprehensive evaluation from an epilepsy expert. Individual, group and family psychological, psychiatric and neurology evaluations, as well as pyschotherapy are all available.
     
  • Friendship Connection Foundation, 17 Maple Drive, Great Neck, (516)422-4727. This unique, non-profit group serves the needs of learning and developmentally disabled adolescents, adults and their parents who are battling anxiety, depression and loneliness. Weekly meetings are held at The New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. Call to sign up or learn more about any of their special programs.
     
  • Grandparent Advocates Supporting Autistic Kids, North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, 480 Old Westbury Road, Roslyn Heights, (516)626-1971, www.northshorechildguidance.org. This support, informational and advocacy group is for concerned grandparents of autistic children. All adult family members are welcome. All meetings take place the last Thursday of every month (except December), 10am-11:30am.
     
  • Grieving Parents: Fetal Demise, Parents of Children with Special Needs, Death of a Child, Termination of Pregnancy due to Genetic Anomoly. For referral to above referenced support groups, call 516-663-2288.

  • Kindred Spirits:Parents of Children with Diabetes meets monthly at Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Blvd., Mineola, NY 11501. Call 516-663-2350 for dates and times.
     
  • KISS (Kids in Special Services), Mid-Island Y JCC, 45 Manetto Hill Road, Plainview, (516)822-3535. An array of classes including sports, arts & crafts, socialization and nutrition are being offered to high functioning children with developmental and/or learning disabilities such as language delay, AD/HD, Asperger’s and Autism Spectrum disorders. Most programs will take place on Tuesdays-Thursdays, and support groups will meet on Sunday mornings from 10:30-11:45. Call to reserve a spot for your child.

  • New Support Groups Formed, Peninsula Counseling Center, 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere,(516)569-6600. The Peninsula Counseling Center is forming new support groups. Get the support you need from groups like Parents of Boys and Girls Ages 6 through 12, Thursdays; Group for Girls Ages 11 through 13, Wednesdays, 8pm; and Parenting Your Teenager, Mondays; Group for Boys Ages 8 through 11, Wednesdays, 7pm; Teen Girls’ Socialization Group. Nassau County’s largest licensed non-profit mental health center has served over 100,000 people since 1913. If you are interested in receiving support for a variety of issues, such as eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, services for handicapped, bereavement groups or support for parents of children with physical or developmental disabilities such as ADHD, Peninsula Counseling Center has the services that you may be searching for. Sandra Whiteside, LCSW, who was a therapist at the Center for 19 years, is offering this special service to help children who are fearful or deal with anxiety or depression daily.   • Sensory Yoga for Children with Special Needs, Om Sweet Om Yoga, Ave A, Port Washington, NY, (516)944-YOGA, gail@omsweetomyoga.com. This workshop is for teachers, parents, OTs, PTs, Speech and other professionals working with children with special needs. Discover the benefits of utilizing and integrating a Sensory Yoga Practice for children with ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Sensory Integration Difficulties and Autism Spectrum Disorders, including PDD and Aspergers as well as behavioral and emotional disturbances. Helps single parents and their children cope with the crises of separation and divorce. Suffolk County Family Support Groups

  • SILO - Suffolk Independant Living Organization has staff that is trained to address the needs of Spanish speaking residents of Suffolk County living with a disability.  SILO also has a Youth Education Advocacy Specialist, Rosemarie Koworowski who is available to work with parents on the many issues surrounging the education of children with disabilities.  She can be reached at (631) 654-8007
