Columbia-Greene Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. is located in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, CGTRC offers horseback riding instruction to individuals with special needs. We offer private or group instruction and offer specials for "day trips" / "field trips".  Participants can enjoy riding in our outdoor arena, take part in a trail ride and enjoy the animals in our small petting zoo. It Takes Two to Talk
       
A family focused program for parents of children with communication delays. Parents learn strategies to assist in language growth that they can use in everyday activities. For more information, call Diana Kakaty @ 441-3100.

Spirit of Independence Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc.
       
The Center is certified by Sunmount DDSO as a medicaid provider agency. Services are provided to individuals from preschool to adult with emotional, mental, physical, mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The Center offers grooming, on ground work and driving. They do not offer riding, but the same methods applied in riding, seat, hand eye coordination, balance, physical exercise, are applied in driving sessions, resulting in positive outcomes and goals. Horses used in the program are Lippitt Morgans, Government Bred Morgans, Norwegian Fjords and a Belgian. Driving horses are a Lippitt Morgan and a Norwegian Fjord. Autism Training Initiative
       
A new training series for educators. Autism Training Initiative provides teachers and other school team members with intense training in the education of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. For more information, contact CARD at 518-442-5132.

Advocate! The Capital District DDSO Family Support Services Consumer Council Needs You!
       
Parents of children with a developmental disability are needed to participate on the Family Support Consumer Council to develop and monitor family support services for the Capital district Developmental Disabilities Services Office's 9-county district.   Meetings take place on the second Monday of each month beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner is provided.
        The Family Support Consumer Council works in partnership with the Capital District DDSO to develop and monitor policies, services and supports to enhance a family's ability to provide in-home care to their family member with a developmental disability. Services range from counseling and training, respite, recreation, to family reimbursement for the purchases of goods and services. This training is designed for parents of children who are dealing with the Committee on Preschool Special Education / Committee on Special Education and children who have 504 plans who have special education needs.
This is an interactive workshop where parents of children who receive special education services take all of the educational records, and organize them into a record keeping book. This workshop will assist parents in becoming more organized in the planning of their child’s education, and the CSE process REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Health is the foundation for all that we do.  Planning for the transition from pediatric to adult health care and considering the impact health will have on adult services is essential. This workshop provides an introduction to the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to promote a successful transition; allows for the sharing of experience through a panel of parents who have navigated transition planning; and promotes self-advocacy and collaboration between youth, families, service providers, the medical community and school systems.  The Healthy Transitions website, a tool for transition planning, will be introduced. “What is Section 504?”

This training will teach parents the difference between Section 504 and IDEA.
Section 504 is a Civil Rights legislation which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities.  Children who qualify under this law receive services and/ or accommodations in the public school system without being classified under IDEA/IDEIA and their school district’s Committee on Special Education. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Intensive Lay Advocacy Training.

The training is designed to provide knowledge about special education regulations and policies related to disabilities.  Participants will develop advocacy skills and become more competent in advocating for their child and other children. The overall intent of the training is to teach ways to become a more effective advocate, to give participants a better knowledge base of the laws regarding disabilities and to improve communication skills. 
Participants must reside in one of the counties served by this office.  The counties are Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington

Autism Conference - No More Meltdowns: Handling Challenging Behaviors and Teaching Social Skills

Students on the autism spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers.
