Medicare
       
Medicare is the federal health insurance program covering about 6 million people under age-65 with permanent disabilities.  People under 65 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments generally become eligible for Medicare after a two-year waiting period.

Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income www.ssa.gov
        While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.

        The Social Security Administration provides a simple web-based tool to see if a child might be eligible for benefits. The Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool (BEST) is a tool that you can use to find out if you could be eligible for benefits from any of the programs
Social Security administers. This tool will give you eligibility information based on answers you give to the questions on the following pages; however, BEST is not an application for benefits.
