Regional Coordinator My name is Tia LaFlesh and I am the Regional Coordinator, of the Adirondack Office of Parent to Parent of New York State, located in Plattsburgh, NY. This is only one of the many titles or hats that I wear. I am a wife, a mom to three great kids, a daughter and a friend. The hat that I wear with the most pride is my MOM hat. I have three children and they are all unique in their own ways. In 1999, I had two children and by no means was I Martha Stewart or Suzy Homemaker but I was pretty sure I had an ok handle on being a mom. I was anxiously expecting my third child. My son was born and all of the sudden my MOM hat was turned upside down and now was spelling WOW. Over the course of his first year, nothing that I did, or had previously done, in the past was working. Nothing I tried as a parent, was making a difference and it seemed like all I had accomplished was falling apart at the seams. After several evaluations and doctors visits we learned that our son had a form of High Functioning Autism. At one such doctor appointment, somewhere along the journey, (that is what I affectionately call it), I was given a flyer for Parent to Parent of NYS. I called immediately. After an hour long conversation, I was on my way to learning and growing. In the next few months, through Parent to Parent, I was given information about my child’s disability, given the opportunity to speak to other parents that were dealing with similar issues, was provided with valuable training on special education and what my rights were as a parent, but most important, I was given opportunities to share what I was feeling. It has been seven years since this journey began and I am a stronger, educated advocate for my family and others. Now I am trying to help others turn their WOW’s into something more manageable by providing the same things that I was fortunate to have found in Parent to Parent of New York State.
