Advocate – the Broome DDSO Family Support Services Consumer Councils Need You.
       
Parents of children with a developmental disability are needed to participate on the Family Support Consumer Council to develop and monitor family support services for the 6 counties region of Broome DDSO.
        The Family Support Consumer Councils work in partnership with the Developmental Disabilities Services Offices to develop and monitor policies, services and supports to enhance a family's ability to provide in-home care to their family member with a developmental disability. Services range from counseling and training, respite, recreation, to family reimbursement for the purchases of goods and services.   For further information, contact  Jeff Envid at 607-771-7784 x 152

Collaborative Problem Solving for The Explosive Child

J. Stuart Ablon, Ph.D. and author of The Explosive Child, will provide an overview of a model of treatment called Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS). The CPS model helps adults teach cognitive skills while reducing the frequency and intensity of explosive/noncompliant episode in diverse settings, including families, schools, group homes, and inpatient and juvenile detention facilities. Positive Behavior Supports for Addressing Challenging Behaviors

Families of individuals with challenging behaviors, and their school and support staff often ask, “Why is he/she acting like this? Why won’t they stop? What is the purpose of this behavior and how do I figure it out? Dr. Darlene Magito McLaughlin will address these questions in a concrete, meaningful way through use of her training methods in Functional Communication Training (FCT) and Positive Behavior Support (PBS). Analyze and understand challenging behaviors that occur at home or school and develop realistic positive support strategies! Inclusive Recreation Assessment Training

  • Are you a recreation or tourism provider interested in ensuring that your policies, programs, sites and facilities are accessible to all people?
  • Are you interested in learning more about providing inclusive recreation services?
  • Are you a person with a disability, family member or advocate interested in expanding inclusive recreation opportunities in your region?
  • Would you like to become an inclusivity assessor helping to identify inclusive recreation experiences for people with disabilities?

Provided by the Inclusive Recreation Resource Center at SUNY Cortland.  Pre-register by contacting Laurie Penney McGee at penneymcgeeL@cortland.edu or at (607) 753-4833.  If you would like to earn Continuing Education Credits (CEU’s), they will be available on site for a payment of $8.00.  If any accommodations are needed, please provide that information when you register for training.
